Who was Mostafa El-Abbadi

El-Abbadi was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1928. He was the son of the founding father of the College of Letters and Arts at the University of Alexandria, which led to his fascination with academia. He graduated at the age of 22 with distinction and was granted a scholarship to study at an academic institution called the University of Cambridge.

After El-Abbadi graduated after which he was able to return back to University of Alexandria where he was later appointed a professor of classics. While at the university and tenure, he was a specialist with an fascination with Alexandria’s Great Library of Alexandria. He would eventually become an acclaimed author on the subject and give lectures on it throughout the globe. The results of his research and findings led to his highly-acclaimed work, Life and Fate of the Ancient Library of Alexandria.

In his talks the professor often advocated the idea of a modernization of the library that was once the world’s largest. He ultimately convinced the Egyptian government as well as Unesco to endorse his plan. About 15 years after its creation and construction the Bibliotheca Alexandrina officially opened in 2002.

The library house more than 8 million books across seven floors spread across four museums. It is also home to an observatory. It also serves as an institute for research that is accessible to the general public.
