Mick received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in Folklore and Folklife in 1992. He was awarded a National heritage fellowship in 1999 by the National Endowment for arts seven years later. This was for his contributions to public folklore. Mick is also the author of Far from Clover Shores, which tells the story of America and Ireland through a song. It was published by Crown Publications in February 2002. A host of music series featuring Mick has also been on PBS.
