A statement issued by the Irish Football Association read: “Northern Ireland’s senior team of men’s member Kyle Lafferty has been withdrawn from the squad in advance of the forthcoming UEFA Nations League games against Kosovo and Greece. “The Irish Football Association is aware of a video on social media that has been distributed widely. The association also informs us that an investigation is underway into the incident by the club of the striker’s team, Kilmarnock FC.”
Lafferty who has scored 20 goals and 89 goals in Northern Ireland, is his nation’s second highest scorer, however Lafferty, who is 35 years old has been a part and parcel of Ian Baraclough’s squad during recent times and could be in a fight to get back to international football. Northern Ireland will face Kosovo at Windsor Park on Saturday before heading to Athens for Tuesday’s game against Greece. Lafferty was not in training since Tuesday because of an injury to his back.

The footage first surfaced in the evening of Wednesday, Lafferty’s club Kilmarnock announced on Thursday at lunchtime that they were launching an investigation of the event. Kilmarnock’s statement read: “Kilmarnock Football Club are aware of a video that is being circulated on the internet that appears to show an individual from our playing staff using language that is of the sectarian type. “The club considers all forms of discrimination to be completely unacceptable. The issue will be examined at the discretion of the club.”
